Mulch-Style Top Dressing (Soil Health Recipe)

Ingredients

Nantucket Gold Compost™

Shredded leaves, straw, or wood chips

Water

Directions

Spread 1–2 inches of Nantucket Gold Compost evenly over the soil surface.

Keep compost 2–3 inches away from plant stems.

(Optional) For longer-lasting mulch, top compost with 1–2 inches of leaf mulch, straw, or wood chips.

Water lightly to settle.

Timing

Spring: wake up soil and retain moisture

Mid-season: protect soil during heat and drought

Fall: rebuild organic matter and protect soil over winter

Why it works

Compost feeds soil microbes and improves structure at the surface, where soil life is most active. A light mulch layer on top slows evaporation and extends the benefits through the season.

How to decide if you need the mulch layer

Skip mulch if the bed is shaded, moist, or planted densely

Add mulch if soil dries quickly, weeds are an issue, or beds are exposed to wind and sun
